Jay BrewerWhen Phil Brewer was traveling the rodeo circuit riding bulls, Jay Brewer was paying attention.

That’s what boys do when their dads are at work.

Jay noticed all the little things that went with his father’s business. While Phil Brewer wrapped his riding arm to the back of a bucking beast, Jay took mental notes of the men that were in the arena risking their bodies to save the lives of fallen cowboys.

That, in a nutshell, is how the 30-year-old, Graham, Texas, cowboy got his start in his career as a professional bullfighter, a trade he still practices in arenas all across this land. He’s also the top competitor in the Professional Bullfighters’ Daisy Protection Bullfight Tour.

“When I first started fighting bulls, I was all about freestyle bullfighting,” Brewer said. “But now I’d rather focus on the protection end of it, and this competition is right for me.

“You’ve got to have just a natural communication with the guy you’re working with.”

So what was Brewer’s training to do his business now?

“I took gymnastics until I was about 12 years old,” he said. “I think there I learned how to take a fall. Plus it showed my athletic side. I’m stubborn, and I don’t back down much. Athletic and hard-headed. I guess that makes for a good bullfighter.”

How does Brewer feel about being the top-ranked bullfighter in the business?

“I don’t think a whole lot about it,” Brewer said. “It’s kind of humbling. I’m my biggest critic. There are some guys that whenever I watch them, they make it seem so effortless. They just have that natural ability. I always feel like I have to work for it.”
